Welcome to The North Shields

Explore the surroundings

The North East is a spectacular, yet largely undiscovered region encompassing wild moors and uplands, magnificent coastlines and huge skies.

The regional capital of Newcastle is easily accessible from Martineau Guest House. With an unrivalled range of restaurants, shops, galleries, theatres and cinemas, some iconic architecture (and football!), there is everything you need for a great visit.  Just across the river (and accessible from the Metro with a 10 minute walk at the other end) the Sage Gateshead music venue and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art are worthy of a visit in themselves.

Northumberland has an outstanding coastline studded with castles and with miles of golden beaches. Favourite ‘musts’ are Bamburgh Castle with its adjoining long white beach, pretty village and Grace Darling museum. Then glorious Budle Bay, a stunning stop for birdwatchers and onwards to Holy Island with its evocative causeway.

AlnwickCastleAlnwick Castle, seat of the Duke of Northumberland was a location for the Harry Potter movies, and within its estate are Alnwick Garden with its Poison Garden and Tree House Restaurant. Whilst in Alnwick make a beeline for a coffee stop at amazing Barter Books.

English Heritage properties include, Warkworth Castle, Belsay Hall, wildly romantic Dunstanburgh Castle and various roman sites along Hadrian’s Wall

Quirky Chillingham Castle has an eclectic interior with torture chamber and suits of armour, whilst on the estate you can visit the ancient herd of Chillingham Wild Cattle.

National Trust properties include Wallington House, Cragside House and Lindisfarne Castle – each one makes a great day out.

To the west is Kielder Forest and the public Kielder Observatory with the darkest skies in England.

To the south of us you can visit Durham Cathedral which is over 1,000 years old and on the way there why not pick up a bargain at the Barbour Factory shop just near the Tyne Tunnel…..

These are just a few suggestions, come and discover this gem of an area for yourselves.
