Breakfasts

Breakfasts at Martineau are special and always feature highly in guest reviews. I love thinking of new and unusual dishes to put on the breakfast menu and this is the latest one – North Shields smoked haddock rarebit with slow cooked cherry tomatoes and wilted spinach, served on Martineau organic bread. I think this is very tasty and is definitely a winner.

VisitEngland Awards for Excellence

Yesterday was a very exciting day for me as I heard that the guest house has been shortlisted in the VisitEngland 2016 tourism awards in the Taste of England category. This to me is huge as there were a whole range of businesses in the running including Michelin star restaurants yet I am down to the last five in the country! How amazing is that. Winning the gold in the North East Tourism awards was just fantastic but this is the icing on the cake. The awards ceremony is on Tuesday 8th March in Blackpool and should be a great night. Whatever the outcome I consider myself to be a winner just getting to the finals.

Publicity

It is great when we get some publicity for the guest house and recently we. Have been getting quite a bit. This is mainly due to winning the Taste of England gold award at the North East Tourism awards in Novemeber. However this week in the run up to Breakfast Week two of our vegan breakfasts have been featured in the online addition of the Metro Newspaper. You can view this by going to the link below

Awards

I am proud of the awards Martineau Guest has has achieved over the six years I have been here but last night at the North East Tourism Awards I was  really  chuffed to win the North East Taste of England Award. This meant so much to me, even more than the  gold award for the bed and breakfast/guest accommodation I won last year. Why? Well with the B and B award I was in a category with other B and B’s , don’t get me wrong it was great to win, but this year with the Taste award I was up against a whole range of food providers including restaurants, big hotels and top chefs. To win against tough opposition was amazing. The judges gave me some amazing feedback too highlighting my enthusiasm and passion for what I provide. It’s not just about the breakfast but all the other things such as the Taste of the Sea Weekends, the picnics and the hampers. Wow it is so good to be recognised in this way.

A healthy start to your morning

Running a guest house I of course think that breakfast is the most important meal of the day! At Martineau I like to think that we give guests a good start to their mornings with a wide range of choices on the menu including many vegetarian and vegan options. However I am always looking to improve things and the latest addition to the menus are smoothies. There are now three healthy smoothies which guests can choose as part of their breakfast. Today, the first day of the smoothies, two guests chose the Immunity Boost (picture below) which is a refreshing mix of spinach, citrus fruits, ginger and honey. It is a real ‘pick me up’ first thing in the morning.

A busy morning

Running a guest house mornings are usually busy but this morning was exceptionally busy. The guest house is full with one family staying in all the rooms as they are here for a wedding. The groom is staying too and all bar one of them are vegetarian. So why was this morning so busy? Well everyone wanted a different breakfastst and all came down at the same time. There was also five porridges to make too. Some of the vegetarian breakfast have several elements to them so there was a lot to do! I sometimes wonder why I have such an extensive menu but then seeing everyone enjoying their breakfasts I realise why. They were all amazed at the choice for vegetarians and very happy with everything. I am now going to sit down and relax for a while!

Cold mornings

It’s a beautiful  morning this morning here in Tynemouth but you can tell that winter is drawing in as the mornings are getting colder. However inside the guest house we are lovely and warm although it is the first time I have had to light the fire in the breakfast room. I do love this time of year with all the autumn colours and the crisp cold mornings.

Breakfast in bed

It feels very strange this morning not to be cooking breakfasts even though I have guests staying. However everyone has opted for the breakfast in bed hamper which makes a lovely relaxing morning for me!

Marmalade

I opened the last jar of Seville orange marmalade the other day and there won’t be any more until January when the Seville oranges are in season. What to do? Make a different kind of course so yesterday I made this lovely lemon and lime marmalade. This was always my favourite marmalade as a child.

Sunrise

Running the Guest House I am usually up early but tend to be busy in the kitchen getting everything ready for breakfast. However this morning I was up earlier than usual as I am going away for a few days and need to get some jobs done. One of these was taking five bags a re-cycling to the bins at the supermarket. There are not many people re-cycling at 5.30 in the morning but the bonus for me was seeing this lovely sunrise over the Priory. It’s going to be a lovely day here in Tynemouth I think.
